October – March
The book group for short and snappy reads. Bite-size is by invitation only – if you’re in Year 7, 8 or 9 you may receive an invite to join one of our groups. We read a different book each month and meet up at lunchtimes to talk about it. If you receive an invite and would like to join, sign up in the Main School Library.
Sadly, the Peters Book of the Year is not running this year as they are the official supplier and sponsor of the 2017 CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Shadowing Scheme (congratulations Peters!). We will, therefore, be running Book Group instead (see below).
October – March
Open to Years 7-11, there’s no need to join. We’ll advertise the book to be discussed – just sign up in the Main School Library if you like the look of that meeting’s chosen title. Commit to as few or as many as you like! Sometimes we may dedicate the book group to a particular year group.
March – June
The Carnegie Medal is awarded every year to a writer of an outstanding book for children. Get involved and follow the award process by joining our Shadowing Group. Encompassing some of the best books written for young adults, the shortlist never fails to provoke debate and strong opinions. It’s a great way to try new, interesting and often challenging books. Members need to commit to reading the shortlisted titles, attending the weekly meetings and posting reviews culminating in a special joint Awards Ceremony with our Greenaway Shadowing Group to celebrate the official announcement. Places are limited and go very quickly – keep an eye out for the first meeting advertised in early March.
March – June
Members shadow the Kate Greenaway Medal, awarded every year for the most outstanding illustration in a children’s book. Each week we look at the shortlisted books together and in small groups to discuss, review, create and update our own Shadowing webpage concluding in a special joint Awards Ceremony with our Carnegie Shadowing Group to celebrate the official announcement. Membership is by invitation only. If you are lucky enough to receive an invite, you need to be quick – places are limited and go very quickly! Keep an eye out for the first meeting advertised in early March.
Throughout the year
[Formerly known as The Red House Book Award] Open to everyone, members are able to take out extra books in addition to their normal loan allowance. Choose from the termly book bags to read and rate the latest books. We meet once a term at lunchtime following the latest book bag delivery to take a look at the new books and discuss what everyone’s been reading. Members also nominate and vote in the Children’s Book Book Award. Sign up in the Main School Library to take part.
